The definition of “alumni” such as the one from YourDictionary.com explains such a body of people to be those “who previously attended or graduated from a particular school, college or university, or people who had a former association with the same organization.”
What the definition doesn’t convey is the level of commitment and dedication alumni have to a school.
And, in the case of the historic John de la Howe School, the alumni are among the most passionate and dedicated of any whom I have ever met or will meet. Part of this commitment comes from the fact that De La Howe was “home” for many or some alumni during their early lives.
Our history bears testimony to the fact that thousands of young people lived and learned on our campus — since the early 1800s. De La Howe is the longest running school for young people under college age in South Carolina and may be among the oldest schools of its kind in the nation.
Having a body of people so dedicated to the school goes back to July 13, 1957, when 450 people met for the first reunion of John de la Howe Alumni.
When the upcoming Alumni Homecoming on Oct. 13 takes place, 2018 will mark 60 years of having an “official” alumni organization. What a cause for celebration! It was on Feb. 2, 1958, that an Alumni Committee voted to form the John de la Howe School Alumni Association.
During 1959 and 1960, the development of a Constitution and By-Laws was accomplished, and the proposed document was read and discussed on Jan. 17, 1960. A Certificate of Incorporation was issued from the State of South Carolina on July 7, 1960.
On January 29, 1961, the Charter of the John de la Howe School Alumni Association was presented.
For six decades, John de la Howe alumni have worked tirelessly and passionately for the school to succeed. They have seen the school through changing times, missions and fortunes, and yet our alumni have never wavered in their determination for the school’s students and future to be prosperous.
No school, college or university can be strong without a vibrant alumni association. At John de la Howe, we have the best people in place for our future!
Please make plans to attend the 2018 Alumni Association Homecoming and join many of your friends and other alumni who are part of this school’s great history!
